Ah Sing is out in the night, looking for him. Joe Cannon arrives, drunk and lost in the dark. Josefa repeats over and over to RamГіn that she is not allowed to cry. She knows she and RamГіn are targets, and that she will not live long. She feels the weight of the world on her heart, a world that is exploding around her. Josefa asks her lover RamГіn to stay with her. Scene 4: The Stabbing Ned barely escapes the fury of the mob, leaving a distraught Dame Shirley to lament the loss of her only true friend, whose beautiful voice will never be heard again in these mountains. Joe and Clarence are feeling bullish, singing a song to help restore their virile pride: вЂњGive me a man thatвЂ™s all a man, who stands up straight and strong. Josefa and RamГіn remember an afternoon far outside the city when their love was dangerous, fresh, and unobserved. Joe is a particularly drunk, aggressive customer and his crude advances towards Josefa trigger an ugly incident. He deals, she is there to attract the crowd: вЂњWithout a girl, there can be no hotel, without a beautiful one, there can be no business.вЂќ The miners are addicted to gambling, making fortunes, and hopelessly ruining themselves, night after night. Panicking in the face of her expectations, Joe runs out into the night. She sizes him up and decides he is the perfect man to help her realize her future ambitions. Joe romances Ah Sing with a corny old song. Sellars's previous collaborations with Adams have included premiere productions of Nixon in China, The Death of Klinghoffer and Doctor Atomic (for which Sellars also wrote the libretto).Josefa, a young Mexican who works the bar, and Ah Sing, a vivacious young Chinese prostitute, voice a more sober view of life. According to Sellars, 'These true stories of the Forty-Niners are overwhelming in their heroism, passion and cruelty, telling tales of racial conflicts, colorful and humorous exploits, political strife and struggles to build anew a life and to decide what it would mean to be American.' Adams wrote, 'To be able to set to music the authentic voices of these people, whether from their letters or their songs or from newspaper accounts from their time, is a great privilege for me.' Sellars, who also directed the opera, conceived the libretto while doing research for a production of Giacomo Puccini's 1910 opera La fanciulla del West (based on David Belasco's 1905 play The Girl of the Golden West), which also deals with the gold rush period. The libretto is also sourced from other literature of the period, including newspaper articles and the writings of Mark Twain. Clappe published the letters under the pen name Dame Shirley. The opera is inspired by the 1851/1852 letters of Louise Clappe, who lived for a year and a half in the mining settlement of Rich Bar (now Diamondville, California) during the California Gold Rush.
